  • Knights of the Altar (Altar Servers) are very dedicated and make a conscious decision to serve our Lord through their assistance at Mass. Parents, too, join in this beautiful commitment to our faith by supporting their children in this special service. Knights of the Altar assist the priest at every Mass in a truly wonderful way to show their commitment, dedication, and love of service to our Lord.

SECTION ONE:     WHO IS A KNIGHT OF THE ALTAR?

Who is a Knight of the Altar?  A Knight of the Altar is an altar server whose ministry is one of service to the People of God and whose Code of Honor is to conduct him/herself--as a Christian--in a manner worthy of the Sacred Liturgy in which he/she is serving.

What are the duties of a Knight of the Altar?

    1.  To carry the cross or candles during the entrance procession of the Mass.
    2. To carry the cross or candles during the offertory procession.
    3. To carry the cross or candles during the concluding procession of the Mass
    4. To participate in all the prayers, singing, gestures, and responses of the Mass.
    5. To assist at the altar during the Eucharistic Prayer and/or Communion.
    6. To ring the bells during the Eucharistic Prayer.
           7. To serve as a Thurifer during Mass.
           8. To serve as a trainer of altar servers.

What is the proper attire of a Knight of the Altar?
A Knight of the Altar will wear Sunday best clothing under his/her robe with a cincture and dress shoes (no sneakers, sandals, flip-flops).  An alb (white baptismal robe) will be assigned to each knight.  Each knight is responsible for the maintenance of this alb.

Six Pins – Ability to train new Knights to perform #1 through #7.
                  Seven Pins - Knight Commander.

         What is the point system?
A Knight of the Altar can earn three points at the Mass he/she serves: one point for reporting         15 minutes before Mass; one point for serving; one point for participating in all the prayers,             singing, gestures, and responses of the Mass.  Not showing up for an assigned Mass equals             zero points.  Total points are then tallied for a grand annual total to receive a one-day or two-         day or three-day wristband for the Annual Carnival held Father's Day Weekend (Friday,
         Saturday, Sunday).

         SECTION TWO:     KNIGHT NOTES

NEW LETTER TO ALTAR SERVERS (sent November 24, 2022)

As we enter the new liturgical year with the First Sunday of Advent on November 27, we'd like to             open a new opportunity for you!

Beginning the weekend of the First Sunday of Advent, all altar servers will have the option to serve
at any Mass of his/her choosing. As with every Mass, each server will be checking-in at the table         located at the foyer (vestibule) of the church, to make sure he/she is signed-in to an available slot.       Make sure you arrive at least 15 minutes early to get a slot: each Mass will have a maximum of five
         altar server slots.

Just to emphasize the "fun" part the "faith, fellowship, and fun" of being a Knight of the Altar, when       you sign-in to serve at a Mass, you will have the chance receive up to THREE points.

Please check out the parish website at https://incaglendale.org/altar-servers  for more information
         about the point system.

This point system allows for you to accumulate enough recorded points to be eligible for a one or
two or even a three-day, unlimited-ride wristband at our Annual Father's Day Carnival in June 2023!

       FAQs
Question: Am I limited to three points per weekend?  Answer: No. You can earn additional points by
serving at additional Masses during a weekend.

Question: If I serve at a School Mass during the week, can I accumulate points? Answer: Yes, as
long as you're an altar server who also serves at a Sunday Mass. In other words, if you only serve
at School Masses but do not serve at a Sunday Mass, then you are not eligible for the point system
         towards a Carnival unlimited-ride wristband.

Every week, the accumulated points will be updated on the Knights of the Altar page on the parish
website. You can monitor how well you're doing on your way to a wristband at the Carnival.

Last year several of our altar servers received a three-day, unlimited-ride wristband! You can do
         that, too!

On your mark, get set, GO!

Shoes: Don't leave any points on the table!  You cant get three points per Mass for 1) showing up
15 minutes before Mass, 2) wearing dress shoes, and 3) participating fully in the Mass (responses,        singing, gestures, etc.).  Don't just get two points because you're not wearing dress shoes!  Also,          when there are special Masses, one of the special considerations is your consistency in attaining        three points for each Mass, especially receiving that one point for dress shoes!
