In the opening statement of his letter to
priests on Monday, December 21, Archbishop Gomez recognizes the state of parishes during last-minute preparation
s
before Christmas, the intense surge of Coronavirus cases, and the full occupancy of ICU beds in all hospitals in Southern California. He also sees the difficulty of attending Mass outdoors during the cold season. He issued this important statement:
“In response to this need, and in accordance with recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings, Los Angeles County Public Health recently gave permission for our churches to reopen, with specific limitations.”

He is concerned about our health and safety.
The dispensation from attending Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligations remain in effect.
He is encouraging elderly parishioners and those already in poor health to remain at home.
It is safer to continue celebrating outdoor Masses, per the recommendation of Los Angeles County Public Health.
If the pastor believes that it is better to offer live-streamed Mass or to celebrate Mass outdoors, he may proceed accordingly.
In consultation with our parish staff and leaders, particularly those involved in liturgy, safety, and maintenance, we will continue our Christmas services as we planned them to be. We will wait for the reopening of indoor services until the church
building is made safe and ready. In the meantime, we are considering and weighing all needs and concerns.
Remember that our primary intention and objective is the health and safety of every person, especially at this time when ICU beds in hospitals all over Southern California are
filled to capacity.
Let us also make sacrifices in solidarity with the medical professionals who are trying their best to save lives and take care of patients.
