The LECTOR MINISTRY provides a profound and powerful avenue to enrich and deepen a parishioner’s faith experience. The Lector Ministry is a very important part of the celebration of Mass because lectors are proclaiming the Word of God in the liturgical assembly.  To be truly suited for this ministry, the individual must be a fully initiated Catholic (received Sacraments of  Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist) living in Communion with the Church and with the parish community and have a deep spiritual faith.  Lectors are registered parishioners of Incarnation Catholic Church who attend Sunday Mass here.  Lectors must have good communication and public reading skills to be able to express the dignity of the Scriptures, not only to themselves, but to those listening.

    MINISTRY NOTES:

Weekday Lector Update of June 29, 2021:

    1.  When in doubt about the readings, please check with the priest before Mass.
    2.  Sometimes there is a second reading, especially on feast days.  Please be aware of this.
    3.  When there is a second reading, one lector should do the first reading and another lector do the second reading.
    4.  Lector(s) should sit at the ambo side and read the Entrance Antiphon and Communion Antiphon from the ambo as well  to minimize walking across the front of the sanctuary from one side t0 the next.
    5) Here at Incarnation, Fr. Rodel has asked that weekday lectors read the Entrance Antiphon and the Communion Antiphon at weekday Masses.  When there is singing at a weekday Mass, there is no reading of the Entrance Procession and Communion Antiphon.

Check-In (Sunday Masses, includes Vigil on Saturday):   Please check in at the vestibule (Brand Blvd.) at least 10 minutes before the Mass begins.  Check in is NOT in the sacristy.  Coming early helps with last-minute instructions, changes, etc.  Check to make sure you know where your station is.  At five minutes before Mass, a lector who has not yet checked-in is replaced by Les Rangel-Santos, Director of Liturgy, Music, Communications (or his designee).

Masks:  For now, masks and social distancing are required for employees and volunteers if they are working in the church during Mass (from updated liturgical guidelines of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, dated June 15, 2021).

Attire (Sunday Masses, includes Vigil on Saturday: Please wear your Sunday Best when serving at Mass. Slacks and button-down shirt or suit for men (no shorts, t-shirts).  For ladies, modest clothing--no strapless or sleeveless, see-through, low-cut, tight-fitting blouses or jeans.

Sacristy (Weekday Masses and Sunday Masses, includes Vigil on Saturday):  "Even before the celebration itself, it is commendable that silence to be observed in the church, in the sacristy, in the vesting room, and in adjacent areas, so that all may dispose themselves to carry out the sacred action in a devout and fitting manner ( General Instruction of the Roman Missal)."  This is the reason why check-in for lectors, EMs, and other liturgical ministers is not in the sacristy.  A priest preparing for Mass needs time to prepare himself in mind, body, and spirit, without liturgical ministers going in and out of the sacristy to catch up with the priest or each other.  At the request of clergy, please give them the space they need to prepare themselves for Mass.

Entrance Procession (Sunday Masses, includes Saturday Vigil:  If there is a deacon, it is he who carries the Book of Gospels in the entrance procession.  Lectors are not part of the entrance procession.  If there is no deacon, then only L1 carries the Book of Gospels in the entrance procession.  L2 is not part of the entrance procession at any time.

Sacristy or Vestibule?  The sacristy is where the priest gets ready for Mass.  The vestibule is the entrance at Brand Boulevard.

L2: After the Second Reading, please put the lectionary below, so that there is room for the Book of Gospels during the proclamation of the Gospel.

Lectionary vs. Book of Gospels :  The lectionary is from where lectors read the First Reading and Second Reading.  The Book of Gospels is from where the deacon or priest proclaims the gospel.
